Medication - Shared Care Agreements

At New Road Surgery Bromsgrove, the safety of our patients and the sustainability of our services are our absolute priorities.

In recent years, the demand for complex specialist medications such as those used for ADHD, gender-affirming care, and other specialized conditions, has increased dramatically. Managing and monitoring these high-risk medications requires significant unallocated clinical time and specialist backup. Because general practice is not funded or resourced to absorb this extra workload, our capacity has been completely exhausted.

To protect our core medical services, the practice partners have made the difficult decision to change how we handle Shared Care Agreements (SCAs):
  • New Shared Care Requests: We are no longer accepting new Shared Care Agreements from corporate Right to Choose (RTC) providers, private clinics, or unfunded specialist services. If you are referred to these services, the specialist clinic must manage and issue your prescriptions long-term.
  • Existing Patients: If you are a patient currently registered with us and we already manage an active Shared Care Agreement for you, we will continue to honour this agreement for the time being. Your care will not change right now.
  • New Patients Joining the Practice: If you register as a new patient, we cannot accept or carry over any existing Shared Care Agreements you had with your previous GP. Before you register, you will need to arrange for your specialist provider to take back your long-term prescribing.
We apply these rules universally and objectively across all matching provider models to ensure clinical safety and fairness for everyone. Thank you for your understanding and support as we work to keep your local GP surgery safe and sustainable
