Training

Training

The training of future GP staff is in the DNA of our surgery. Professor Sir Michael Dury the original GP at New Road Surgery set up the school of General Practice within Birmingham Medical school and many of our previous and current GPs, Nursing team and Reception and Administrative teams have been trained within the surgery.

GPs in Training

Our practice is approved to train fully qualified doctors who wish to specialise in General Practice. Our GP registrar will have had 2-4 years of experience as a qualified hospital doctor working in various specialities. They consult patients on their own, under the mentorship of our trainers, Dr Hyde and Dr Raithatha. Occasionally we ask permission to video a consultation. You will always be asked in advance and are given the option not to take part, and this will not affect your care in any way. No recording will be taken without your consent and the camera will be switched off on request. These videos are used only for educational purposes with the doctor doing the consultation and are destroyed after use.

Medical Students

We are also lucky enough to train doctors of the future and are currently have close links with Leicester Medical School. The medical students are usually with us for 8 week attachments. The consult in pairs or individually under the supervision of a fully qualified GP. The medical students might also undertake planned visits or attend urgent visits with another clinician.  Your appointment with the medical students might take a little longer than normal as your case will be reviewed by the supervising GP. If you do not wish your consultation to be with a medical student, please inform the receptionist.

Dr Laugharne and Dr Wallington are our designated medical student leads

Nursing Students

We proudly train nursing students who very quickly become an integral part of the team. They stay with us for 8 weeks learning the principals of primary care nursing.
